Sweden Cracks Down on Match Manipulation in Esports and Traditional Sports

Sweden is increasing its efforts to combat match manipulation, a move welcomed by the gambling sector. They are exploring methods to enhance data exchange regarding questionable actions, a development the Swedish Betting Association (BOS) believes benefits all parties involved.

A fair playing field maintains excitement for gamblers, which in turn boosts the industry. The BOS emphasizes the importance of betting operators and sports bodies collaborating to identify and address suspicious occurrences.

Prominent players in the Swedish betting market, including industry giants like 888, William Hill, and Betsson, are represented by the BOS.

Okay, its fantastic that the Swedish Gaming Inspectorate (SGI) is at last recognizing the problem of unlawful wagering in competitive gaming. They’ve collaborated with sector partners such as the Swedish Esports Federation (SESF) on this for a while, and it appears the government is finally paying attention.

The objective is to boost something known as the ‘channeling rate,’ which essentially means encouraging more individuals to gamble via legal, authorized providers.

The SGI discovered that in March 2023, the channeling rate for esports stood at 77%, in contrast to 84% for conventional sports betting (excluding horse racing). This demonstrates there’s significant progress to be made, particularly as esports is recognized as being especially susceptible to match manipulation. This is likely a contributing factor to the SGI’s recent prohibition of several additional skin betting platforms from operating within Sweden.
