Australia Launches BetStop: A Nationwide Self-Exclusion Register for Online Wagering

Australias fresh nationwide self-ban registry for internet and telephone wagering will be dubbed BetStop. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), responsible for supervising the register’s rollout, has issued industry protocols outlining how gaming operators must advertise BetStop on their platforms, applications, and promotional materials.

These protocols also clarify the process for gaming entities to confirm if a prospective client is listed on BetStop. If so, the company is legally bound to refuse service and deactivate the customer’s account.

BetStop will empower Australians to self-exclude from all authorized interactive betting services for a minimum of three months, or indefinitely.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin stressed that “BetStop will revolutionize the landscape for individuals seeking assistance in resisting the allure of online or telephone gambling.” She indicated that BetStop will be operational in the approaching months and urged the sector to finalize their systems to guarantee they are equipped to safeguard their patrons.

The Australian media regulator, ACMA, is developing a self-exclusion platform for online wagering platforms. Currently, they advise contacting gaming operators directly to limit service access. This development follows ACMA’s measures against thepokies.net, a well-known international gaming site allegedly handling substantial betting sums. In the previous month, ACMA directed Australian internet providers to block site access, representing one of their most significant actions against illicit offshore gambling thus far.
