Betsson Fined €2.5 Million for Operating Without License in Finland

Finnish regulators have imposed a substantial €2.5 million penalty (approximately $2.7 million) on Betsson, a gaming firm. The company was discovered operating without authorization, promoting its wagering services within mainland Finland.

Although Betsson lacks the necessary permits to function in Finland, authorities determined that the company had been conducting a sustained advertising push across multiple channels, specifically aimed at the mainland Finnish market.

Law enforcement in Finland indicated that despite Betsson modifying its marketing strategies following a hearing on the matter, the company persisted in concentrating its efforts on mainland Finland.

“The National Police Board contends that the BML Group has accrued significant financial gains by continuing these operations,” the police declared, “and has concluded that these illicit activities have persisted despite prior enforcement measures undertaken by the National Police Board.”

In addition to the financial penalty, Betsson has been directed to halt all new promotional material targeting mainland Finland on its gaming platform. Furthermore, the company has been instructed to remove all previously disseminated promotional content and discontinue any upcoming marketing initiatives on external websites.

These penalties are set to take effect on June 3rd, although Betsson retains the right to contest the ruling.

This development follows closely on the heels of Betsson reporting a 38% increase in its gross earnings for the initial quarter of 2023, reaching a considerable €147.5 million.

The Chief Executive Officer of Betsson AB, Pontus Lindwall, stressed the company’s sixty-year history of providing amusement to patrons. He emphasized their dedication to ethical gaming practices through a varied selection of casino offerings, wagering on athletic events, and other captivating activities. Lindwall underscored this enduring strategy as fundamental to Betsson’s business, generating worth for both clientele and stakeholders.
